A Dead Cormorant

A few weeks ago a cormorant landed in a tree in the front yard and died. Yes, I know cormorants are water birds and aren't usually in trees. They aren't usually in the desert either. What he was doing here... I don't know... But it was a good chance to talk about death with my children. Death is what awaits us all. Our culture seems to either be obsessed with it in an I-wear-all-black-even-my-lips-and-hair way or we don't want to talk about it. And for us as believers in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, when we die it's gain! (See Philippians 1:21) So I was thankful for the opportunity to talk to the kiddos about this topic.

Anyhow... back to the cormorant... I set out a big bucket of water in case he was thirsty. I didn't have any food for him. We're short on lakes around here. But the next morning he had died with wings opened and had fallen only to be snagged about a yard off the ground on a branch. I was fearful of getting some weird water bird disease so I put on rubber gloves and placed a large cardboard box under him. (With his wings spread out like that he was the size of a small dog). Then I whacked him with a stick until he fell into the box. Then bird, box, gloves AND stick (because I didn't want Malachi to get it) went into the trash...
